GO-EV Car Share
The GO-EV Car Share project provides a fleet of electric vehicles via a community car club that is open to local residents and businesses to join. The aims of the project are to help reduce the number of vehicles being brought to the islands, generate awareness of electric vehicles as a viable option and provide an accessible and affordable transport option to local residents and businesses.
The GO-EV fleet consists of different vehicle types in order to meet a variety of different local needs. Car for common personal usage, Combi with 7 seats for transporting large groups of people and Vans for transporting large items or quantities. Vehicles are sited at multiple locations on St. Mary's including Moorwell, the Aiport, the Health Centre, Old Town and Telegraph.
Electric Vehicle Charging Network
The project has also created a network of electric vehicle charging points on all five islands to provide a solid infrastructure of electricity grid network connections to support the transition to electric vehicles. These electric charging points are a mix of dedicated car share scheme and public chargers for general use for privately owned electric vehicles.
This service enables local residents and businesses to adopt electric vehicles without incurring additional costs to install a dedicated charger at their residence or place of business. Installation of dedicated chargers is often raised as a concern for electric vehicle adoption which the project aims to alleviate with the charging network.
Solar Canopies
At locations such as Ennor Close, the Health Centre and the Five Islands School, solar canopies have been constructed allowing car share vehicles to be directly charged from solar photovoltaic panels.
This allows the car share vehicle service to be more sustainable as it is using local renewable energy to charge vehicles which is both more economical and ecological.
Future Plans
The GO-EV project still continues to evolve and pursue opportunities to support electric vehicle adoption. This includes increasing the number of locations where car share vehicles are sited to new forms of electric transport such as electric cycles.
